DiME 2008 is now planned for Fall 2008. Please check back for more details
Diversity in Media and Entertainment (DiME) 2008 is a first of its kind summit, set to be held in The Historic Sweet’s Ballroom in Oakland, California. DiME has been convened by a committed group of creators within the game and Internet industries, but open to everyone seriously interested in the topic of diversity in all types of media and entertainment endeavors.
| DiME is being hosted by Support Oakland Artists and organized by the Incubate Group. The event is entirely non-profit and all proceeds will be donated to a series of worthy charities. Whether you’re able to attend or not, your support is critical. You can register your support by attending the event – or by making a donation or purchasing event merchandise. |
DiME is a safe place where professional artists and creators can talk, listen and learn from each other, as well as engage directly with the next generation – students and youth who want to join the media and entertainment industries. The first DiME summit has been organized to discuss how far we have come, provide a realistic appraisal of where we are now, and then look at how much further we have to go.
DiME 2008 will raise one of the most burning topics in media today – the conflict between the continuing concentration of ownership of major media and the assumed counter-balancing effect of social networks and the Internet. DiME will use an ecological model and framework to organize the discussion about the continuing lack of diversity in the technology, media and entertainment industries – from creators, to staff, to executives, to product funding choices, to children and schools – on through to identifying opportunities to address underserved markets.
WARNING: DiME will provide an opportunity and soapbox to review individuals’ frank personal perspectives and experiences within the entertainment and media industries. DiME will allow speakers to openly talk about their thoughts on continuing structural issues that prevent what should be a natural democratic and meritocratic system from working. There may be heartfelt and emotionally raw exchanges on the addressed issues of racism, sexism and homophobia.
DiME 2008 speakers will also focus on the new opportunities being created by growing racial, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity, while looking beyond stereotyping and simplistic segmentation of audiences. DiME’s goal is to encourage deeper discussions about larger trends, such as the high rate of women’s use of technology for entertainment, the urbanization of culture, engaging the LGBT early adopters, and the untapped economic opportunity with faith-based products.
